 The Beginning

The project started this week on Key Thorpe Road Leicester where I spoke to the son of the laundrette owner in the corner shop/laundrette. I observe his day to day, the customers that greet him and ask him questions, at times he switches to Urdu, the cash draw opening and closing between each interaction.

We move to the laundrette where talks over the 30 years history of his family living in this area, how the laundrette turned from takeaway to what it is now. What he has seen living here, working here, being here even. What it means for the laundrette to be established. We touched upon family, community, the past, Covid, new and old beginnings, Leicester's rich textile legacy, sweatshops and labour.

I came back the Saturday after to speak to the customers, he already said but worth observing that most of the people who use the laundries are male and that is surprising to him and me.
